Red Light Relay uses light as a signal call and networking device to momentarily moment jump the divide and contract space between neighbors and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute set high on the hill. The event begins with a 3 minute ringing of church bells, to signal street and hill participants. RLR begins atop the hill in West Hall home of the iEAR Arts Department as light holders are choreographed in the stairwells, they pass a signal to light holders on the hill, who's signal must cross the 6th street divide, once the train depot of troy, to Fulton Street in Downtown Troy, where window watching participants on the top floors of each building await their signal. Lights are passed creating a chain reaction that quickly snakes down the hill through apartments and offices until trapped in the modern glass walkway of the mostly abandoned mall just short of the Hudson River. The public walkway glows red as the last light hits it where everyone is offered free cake. The lights remain lit for the weekend.
